Back in 2011, Mohd Yazzid Hashim couldn’t imagine speaking to a room full of people to present his latest web design concept. The thought alone sent shivers down his spine.
Yet today, as a Senior Web & Multimedia Designer for QNET, our wellness and lifestyle entity, he does just that – and much more – something that speaks volumes about his remarkable growth within the QI Group.
“I was the guy who would rather let his work do the talking,” Yazzid says with a soft chuckle. “Now, I’m designing digital experiences that speak to millions. It’s been quite a ride.”
When he joined us, he came with a background in illustration work, having graduated as an Art & Design major.
His previous experiences in the Malaysian e-learning industry had given him a taste of the professional world, but it was his passion for multimedia production that led him to QI’s doorstep.
“I was shy and introverted,” Yazzid recalls, of his early days. “The thought of presenting ideas or speaking up in meetings was daunting.”
Yet, little did he know that when he joined QI, the move would be a catalyst for his personal and professional growth. From day one, he was thrust into projects that pushed him beyond his comfort zone.
His first major task was revamping the website of the QI Group – a responsibility that required not just technical skills but also the ability to understand and articulate the company’s vision.
He credits Ramya Chandrasekaran, QI Group’s Chief Communications Officer, as having played a crucial role in his development.
“She kept challenging me with new things,” Yazzid says, a hint of gratitude in his voice. “It wasn’t always easy, but each challenge was an opportunity to learn and grow.”
As years passed, his role evolved. From designing emails and creating videos, he ventured into UI/UX design, experimented with motion graphics, and even worked on cutting-edge AR/VR projects.
“The company’s willingness to let me explore and implement new technologies was incredible,” he shares. “It wasn’t just about doing my job; it was about constantly reinventing what my job could be.”
QI’s holistic approach to employee development was instrumental in Yazzid’s personal growth. He highlights the STEER programme, moderated by QI Group co-founder Joseph Bismark, and QI Rising, a leadership-focussed team-building initiative, as pivotal experiences.
“STEER and QI Rising were turning points for me,” Yazzid reflects. These programmes, emphasising service, teamwork, and resolve, helped him develop a stronger sense of purpose and overcome his introverted nature. “Now, I’m more confident in pitching ideas and contributing as a team player.”
Yazzid values QI’s diversity, noting, “working with a global team has broadened my perspective.” He also appreciates the company’s commitment to social responsibility through the Employee Community Impact (ECI) programme. Through ECI, his visits to the indigenous people’s villages and orphanages in Malaysia have reinforced the importance of giving back, which he hopes to inculcate in his children.
In his current role that focusses on QNET’s digital content marketing, Yazzid remains excited about pushing boundaries with new technologies to elevate the brand and enhance customer service.
His advice to newcomers? “Be flexible, embrace change, and always adapt to new challenges.”
