In the coastal community of Bangrak, Koh Samui, QI Group employees are driving positive change through hands-on action. As part of the Employee Community Impact (ECI) Programme, volunteers from Prana Resort Nandana, local NGOs, and residents came together to restore beaches and strengthen community ties.
Protecting the Coastline
Teams collected plastic waste and debris from the shoreline, helping to protect marine ecosystems and preserve the island’s natural beauty. The activity also raised awareness among residents and tourists about the importance of responsible waste disposal and ocean protection.
Empowering Through Education
Beyond the clean-ups, volunteers engaged with local children and families in mentorship and learning activities. These sessions encouraged environmental awareness and fostered a stronger sense of community ownership.
The Global Context: Ocean Pollution
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), around 11 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year, affecting marine life and coastal livelihoods. Without urgent action, this could nearly triple by 2040.
The UNESCO Ocean Literacy Report warns that over 800 marine species are impacted by pollution, and that plastic accounts for about 80% of all marine litter.
These global challenges underscore the importance of local efforts like those in Koh Samui, where grassroots community action contributes to a healthier planet.
Sustaining Long-Term Impact
The Koh Samui initiative reflects QI Group’s commitment to responsible business and sustainability, and aligns with the company’s ESG Strategy & Roadmap (2025–2028), as reaffirmed in its latest UN Global Compact report.
By empowering employees and supporting local communities, QI Group puts its ESG values into action, protecting ecosystems, fostering responsible tourism, and contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This social and environmental initiative also supports the Group’s Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) stewardship by reducing coastal litter pressures on marine biodiversity.
